STORY

Bunmei Okabe’s world
----Clowns painter ,the trajectory of half century

Bunmei Okabe used be a rugby player in his school days. At the age of 17, he injured himself during a scrum practice at school and he lost control of his hands and legs since that day in 1965.

One day four rugby players of the touring New Zealand Universities paid a visit to Bunmei at his hospital in Beppu city. They were M. Williment, S.H.O. Reaney,M.T.Brown and U.J. Ussher.

Bunmei was encouraged by this visit and got back his pride as a rugby player. Bunmei started to think what he could do and offer on his wheelchair. Finally he has decided to start drawing and painting clowns he saw at a circus since 1973. 50 years have passed since he started his work as an artist and his unique pictures have received a number of prizes. In 2011 he had his own exhibition in New Zealand during the Rugby World Cup 2011. Bunmei wanted to thank the rugby players of New Zealand Universities who visited and encouraged him in his hospital. His long waited dream came true.

Bunmei played rugby only for one year and a half but he learned real sprit of rugby, which is to keep going forward no matter how many times he was knocked down. Bunmei is running as a rugby boy even now by painting his picture on his while canvas.
